Programming & Service Delivery
Programming/Service Delivery Models
All teachers working with English learners must collaborate to help English Learners grow in their thinking, language skills, and emotional well-being. It's important to make sure that English learners have the support they need to understand and meet grade-level expectations. By offering the right support and guidance, teachers can help English Learners succeed academically and socially. To achieve this, teachers need to work closely together collaborating to provide scaffolded instruction, provide learner-focused teaching, and ensure fair assessments for all students. This teamwork also helps strengthen relationships among students, teachers, families, and the community, forming lasting partnerships that go beyond the school walls.
Instructional Approaches:
Pull-out ESL: Conducted by a licensed ESL teacher in a separate classroom during specific time slots in a student's schedule. It offers targeted, systematic, explicit, and sustained instruction aligned with standards and focused on language development in connection with content areas. This method suits scenarios where a few English learners are spread across different grade levels.
Embedded ESL: Led by a teacher with dual licensure in both ESL and a specific grade level or content area within regular classrooms. Integrated into the school's schedule and individual learners' routines, this approach delivers dedicated, systematic, and sustained language-focused instruction aligned with standards and content topics. Particularly common at the elementary level, embedded ESL proves effective when the student population includes a significant number of English learners.
Push-in ESL: Led by an ESL teacher within grade-level or content area classrooms at designated times in students' schedules. This method offers explicit, systematic, and sustained language-focused instruction aligned with standards and content topics. Push-in ESL is often suitable for elementary levels due to secondary settings' instructional and logistical characteristics.
Co-taught ESL: A collaborative teaching model where both an ESL teacher and a grade level/content area teacher share teaching responsibilities for the same group of students. Co-teachers collaboratively plan, deliver, and assess systematic, explicit, and sustained ESL instruction aligned with standards and content topics. This approach, part of regular schedules, takes place in grade level/content area classrooms, promoting a supportive environment for English learners and co-teachers alike.
